At KidzVil Pediatric Dentistry, we’re proud to offer tooth extractions to our patients when necessary.
Tooth extractions can be necessary for many reasons. Some teeth are too diseased to save, some are too damaged, and in other cases we may need to remove teeth if your child’s mouth is overcrowded. This is one of several reasons we may also recommend a space maintainer afterward to protect the space for permanent teeth.
We always perform a thorough examination with X-rays to determine the best course of action for your child. We’ll go through your options with you so we can make the right decision together.
If we decide your child needs an extraction, we’ll numb the area before starting, then remove the tooth. There’s usually a small amount of bleeding as the mouth forms a blood clot to heal the area.
Aftercare of your child’s mouth is important. We’ll go over the correct way to care for the area after a tooth removal. Your child’s mouth may be sore for a few days as it heals, and we don’t recommend drinking with a straw or eating foods that may aggravate the area. Your child will need to continue caring for the rest of their teeth, so extra care should be taken around the site of the missing tooth.
We’re here for you and your child if any problems come up after surgery. Some children experience extra discomfort and pain, so we can recommend certain pain medications. If you notice swelling in the area, your child should come in to be seen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would my child need a tooth extraction?
Extractions may be necessary if a tooth is too diseased or damaged to save, or if your child’s mouth is overcrowded and extra room is needed for developing teeth.
Is a tooth extraction painful for children?
We numb the area before the procedure to keep your child comfortable, and any post-procedure soreness is typically manageable and temporary.
What should I do to care for my child after an extraction?
Avoid drinking with a straw or giving foods that may aggravate the healing area, and follow the specific aftercare instructions we provide for the first few days.
Will my child need a space maintainer after an extraction?
In some cases, yes. If a baby tooth is removed early, we may recommend a space maintainer to protect the space for the permanent tooth.
What if my child has pain or swelling after an extraction?
Some discomfort is normal and can typically be managed with recommended pain medication, but if you notice swelling, your child should come back in to be evaluated.
